The relationship that a leader has with his or her team is vital to the success of the operation. There has been a lot of stuff written about teams and about self-directed teams. In reality, there is no evidence that self-directed teams actually achieve a great deal. What happens is that someone becomes the de facto leader. If you think about teamwork it is all about the collective efforts of individuals working together to achieve a result that no one individual could have achieved by themselves.

This is not just about the collective strength in numbers but about using all the resources of the team, plus their skills and experience. Under today’s working conditions, there is a complexity that has not been present before. So much so that years ago it was possible for one person to cope with everything in a leadership position. Now, however, most leaders depend on a well functioning team.

Working in a team is a great experience. It’s possible to take genuine pleasure in the success of the individuals and the team. And when things don’t work out, the qualities of acceptance, humor and putting the thing right come to the fore.

Building a successful team can be a challenge under certain circumstances. Sometimes the potential team members don’t have the will to contribute. This is where the leader’s ability to communicate and motivate come in to play. When you can create a high performing team, the team members perceive that they have a value to the business much more than their routine tasks. People feel that they contributing to a larger objective than they would attempt on their own.

Often the relationship between the leader and the team is one where the leader is the coach and mentor for the individuals within the team. At other times, the leader is the person who provides the vision, sets the standards and is the motivator for the necessary behavior. The job of the leader is not to solve the problems of the team but to create an environment where they will solve their own.

They may ask for an opinion or some information but not the solution. If the leader gives a solution, then he or she is on the way to destroying the relationship between themselves and the team. This is because the team must have the collective ability to deal with situations that arise. If the leader denies them the opportunity for learning, the team will quickly become dysfunctional.

Finally, the leader, by virtue of their position, has a great deal of influence over the quality of the relationship between themselves and the team. Before planning to assemble a team, the leadership note down how he or she is going to influence the relationship.
